As a psychology student observing work trends closely, I believe it’s time we address the mental cost of constant productivity.

### The Rise of Hustle Culture: Fuel or Folly?

Startups are known for speed, innovation, and agility. This culture often demands extreme commitment — founders and employees alike feel pressure to work longer hours and “prove” their worth through overexertion.

But research shows that **overworking leads to burnout, anxiety, and decreased productivity**. According to the World Health Organization, burnout is now recognized as an occupational phenomenon caused by chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.

Ironically, the very drive that’s supposed to lead to success can lead to exhaustion and failure.

### Mental Health Is Not a Luxury — It's a Foundation

In the psychology field, we study how consistent stress impairs cognitive function, emotional regulation, and decision-making. This is especially dangerous in startups, where leaders must think clearly and employees often multitask under pressure.

When rest is treated as weakness and emotional vulnerability is seen as a flaw, we create an environment where:


- Employees are afraid to ask for help

- Founders ignore their own mental health

- Toxic productivity becomes the norm



We must **shift the narrative** — success and sanity are not mutually exclusive.
