Delhi Daredevils suffered a big jolt ahead of their Indian Premier League campaign as captain Kevin Pietersen was on Wednesday ruled out of their opening match on Thursday against Royal Challengers Bangalore here due to a finger injury. Pietersen, who was bought by Daredevils for USD 1.5 million (Rs 9 crore), had sustained an injury on his right hand little finger during fielding drills with Surrey at The Oval last month.

Royal Challengers Bangalore retained Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle. With Yuvraj Singh the Rs. 14-crore acquisition in the middle-order Bangalore batting looks top-heavy. Delhi Daredevils will be jolted by the absence of Kevin Pietersen for the first clash. Dinesh Karthik will lead the side. Delhi will be looking to get off to a winning start and get an early momentum. AB de Villiers is a master when it comes to innovations. He has the propensity to unsettle any bowler and put him under pressure. He’s one of the best finishers in the game. If Yuvraj Singh gets his bearings right, Bangalore will certainly fancy their chances of reaching the top four. An in form Yuvraj makes a huge difference to Bangalore’s fortunes. Parthiv Patel is likely to open the innings for Bangalore. Either Vijay Zol or Tanmay Mishra will play in the middle-order.Over the years, RCB’s bowling has let them down. This year Australia’s left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc will lead the attack. Indian pacers Varun Aaron and Ashoke Dinda will be, in all likelihood, in the playing XI. Muttiah Muralitharan and Shadab Jakati may be the spinning combination RCB would field.

One of the major setbacks for the Daredevils is the injury of Kevin Pietersen which has ruled him out of the first clash. One of the options will be to get Quinton de Kock in the fray as an opener. Alternatively Delhi may think of getting James Neesham in the side as an all-rounder. Ross Taylor, JP Duminy and Nathan Coulter-Nile will, in all probability, the other three foreign players. Murali Vijay, who had been successful for the Chennai Super Kings, will open the innings. If de Kock plays he will be the other opener or else Dinesh Karthik may walk in to bat with his Tamil Nadu teammate.
