The 152-year-old firm Pfizer Inc. is a research-based global healthcare company with a world reputation. It has been designated many times by Fortune as the world's most respected pharmaceutical corporation. The largest drug company in the world, Pfizer has brought innovative medicines of the highest quality to the Chinese market, enabling Chinese to lead healthier lives.

An outstanding staff and scientific management have made Pfizer Pharmaceuticals Ltd. a leader in the field. This dialogue between project staff and Ms. Zhang sheds light on the managerial outlook and opinions of high-level HR practitioners.

Q: Director Zhang, we all know that Pfizer is a top pharmaceutical company worldwide. What makes Pfizer so successful?

A: During Pfizer's one and a half centuries of existence, its corporate culture and core values have laid the groundwork for the firm's continuing development and success. Let me focus on one special core value - leadership. Inside our company, we all know the motto "Everyone is a leader".

Q: Could you elaborate?

A: Traditional management concepts identify senior management people, above all the CEO or GM, as the "leaders" of a firm. Their leadership skills are undoubtedly very important. However, the leadership Pfizer tries to foster is not confined to this group; instead it encompasses everyone in the company. Each member of the staff, whatever his position or level, no matter when he joined Pfizer, no matter who he or she is, whether general manager or secretary , is a leader and gets leadership training.

Q: Why does Pfizer put so much stress on leadership?

A: There's a sort of domino effect. As Dr. Kenneth Blanchard, a well-known American business management expert has commented, leadership is a process of influence. No matter what job you do, a hardworking spirit, a sincere and dynamic attitude towards your work, will affect your colleagues and even, perhaps in ways you don't notice, your boss. If the good qualities of every staff member influence the other Pfizer people - well, you can imagine what kind of company Pfizer is. This is the reason why Pfizer regards leadership as a comprehensive management concept.

Q: Does leadership training really make everyone a leader at Pfizer?

A: Yes. At Pfizer, each member of the staff has his own leadership development plan. Of course, the training has a different emphasis depending on the employee's position. For example, a manager or above will take training courses like Situational Leadership II, Eight-step Coaching and Leader Behaviors. He or she will also participate in an all-round survey, and make good use of the knowledge gained from training courses in making performance evaluations, setting objectives, reviewing compensation etc. Normal staff will have basic knowledge and skills training. Leadership training has become an indispensable part of all kinds of Pfizer meetings. Our employees constantly strive for a deeper understanding of the meaning of leadership. Of course they share in the gratifying success of the company, which is due to good leadership. This is all done through training, workshops, best-practice sharing and other vivid and interesting activities.
