Nobel for Venkataraman

You wouldn’t guess this was the same Venki who had flunked the IIT and medical entrance exams — that was before he went on complete B.Sc Physics from Baroda University in 1971.

Now Dr Venkataraman Ramakrishnan made his parents, Tamil Nadu, and the country proud, by winning the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry — he shared it with Thomas A. Steitz and Ada E. Yonath — “for studies of the structure and function of the ribosome”.

Last year, he won the Padma Vibhushan — India’s second highest civilian honour. He now works at a lab in Cambridge, England. He has an American citizenship.

His work has come as an inspiration for young Indian scientists and an eye opener for the government that needs to provide a scientific culture of excellence.
