India announces gas hydrate find

NEW DELHI: India’s Petroleum & Natural Gas minister Murli Deora on Wednesday announced the successful completion for gas hydrate coring/drilling projects in Indian Offshore.

Speaking after inaugurating the three-day International Conference on “Gas Hydrates” at Noida, near here, he said, “I am informed that we have discovered one of the best gas hydrate reservoirs in K G Area. This is a very exciting development”.

Murli Deora also pointed out that production from gas hydrates is a long-term goal for many developed countries but it is expected that the production of gas from gas hydrates may be realized sooner due to accelerated efforts by a few countries like India, USA and Japan.

India becomes only the third country in the world to undertake such an ambitious programme on gas hydrates in offshore areas. Gas hydrates potential, if exploited fully, could make available much more fuels than the presently known conventional fuels.

The results of the exploration program were released on the occasion.

An international team led by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (under the Government of India’s Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas) conducted the expedition.
