IIM Kozhikode participates in the 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan'

Kozhikode, 2nd October 2014: IIM Kozhikode joined the national efforts of PM Narendra Modi' s 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan' today on October 2, Mahatma Gandhi's 145th birth anniversary. The central government has launched the biggest ever cleanliness and sanitation drive in the country with an aim to achieve a 'clean India' by 2019 when the nation will mark 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Mr. MP Asokan, President, Gram Panchayat, Koonamangalam district, flagged off the 1-month drive as the IIM Kozhikode community cheered on enthusiastically. The students were joined by the college faculty members and their families, and about 300 children from the schools in the area. The ceremony began with an oath that was administered to the participants, in which they pledged to spend 100 hours every year towards the cause of cleanliness. The drive covered a distance of 2 km outside the campus premises, where faculty members, management students, and school children cleaned the littered streets, inspiring onlookers to join their efforts.

IIM Kozhikode has been long investing in cleanliness initiatives. The green campus has had a rainwater harvesting system in place for many years now, and also encourages students to keep the premises waste-free. Prof. Mahesh Bhave, the chief guest of the event, emphasized on the significance of sustained community participation in the cause so as to leave a cleaner India for our future generations.
