PGP Batch Profile (Batch 2010-12)
The IIM Calcutta PGP batch of 2012 has 362 students in its two flagship post-graduate programs PGDM and PGDCM. Of the 362, 309 students are in the PGDM course and 53 in PGDCM. The PGDCM program, the first of its kind in India, is in its 17th year, while the original PGDM course is seeing the 47th batch. The intake has decreased from 408 for the 2009-11 batch to 362 this year for the 2010-12 batch.
The percentage of women in the batch is 12%, up from 10% last year. There are 5 student who’ve secured a 100 percentile in CAT, while there are 52 other students with a CAT score higher than 99.9 percentile. IIM Calcutta has always had the highest CAT cut-off across all IIMs and this year as well, this is manifested in the scores of the incoming batch. The average GMAT score in the batch is 730, which is higher than last year’s average and is also one of the highest in the country.
Overseas Candidates:

The batch includes 32 overseas candidates who have been admitted through the GMAT examination, while the rest of the students have been admitted through CAT. The number of overseas candidates has increased considerably compared to last year, when there were only 19 overseas candidates. Overseas candidates are typically students who have completed their undergraduation in various parts of the world, or have worked outside the country for a considerable amount of time and have decided to come to IIM Calcutta to pursue their management studies in India.
Students have chosen IIM Calcutta over various leading international B-schools. Some of the international schools rejected for IIMC are the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Leeds University Business School, UK, Kelley School of Business, IESE Business School, Barcelona, Spain, National University of Singapore, Melbourne Business school, Australia, St Gallen, Switzerland and Manchester Business School, UK.
Work-Experience:

The number of students with prior work-experience has increased from 63% last year to 68% this year. The average work experience is 20 months. As last year, many of the students have left lucrative jobs to pursue the management program at IIM Calcutta, valuing the potential upside of the education more than their jobs. Students who have worked with leading investment banks and popular recruiters at IIM Calcutta like Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, Barclays Capital, Nomura, JP Morgan and Credit Suisse, are also part of the fresh batch.
There is considerable diversity in the nature of work experience, with candidates having previously worked in NGOs, public sector companies, Indian armed services, consulting firms, healthcare firms, IT firms and in education. There are students who have worked as Scientists, teachers and in positions as senior as Operations head, while there are around 15 entrepreneurs who have started their own businesses.
Education:

The 2010-12 batch consists of a majority of engineers, as is usual in IIM Calcutta. This year, 91% of the batch comprises of engineers. This is less than last year’s ratio of 94% engineers. Within engineering, there are students from diverse streams like aeronautical engineering, Agricultural and food engineering, biomedical engineering, Fibre and Textile processing and aerospace engineering.
While a large part of the engineers are from institutes like the IITs and NITs in the country, this year, there are students from various universities around the world, like The Pennsylvania State University, Purdue University, University of Maryland, University of New Brunswick, Canada, University of Adelaide, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore and University of Melbourne.
Apart from engineers, the batch consists of doctors, economists, naval architects, botanists, accountants and scientists. There are also students who have graduated in history, education, journalism and political science.
Post-Graduate Candidates:

The batch of 2010-12 contains 22 post-graduates, who have decided to do an MBA in IIM Calcutta after their post-graduation. The students are post-graduates in streams like transportation engineering, life sciences, economics, thermal and fluid engineering, human resource management, social entrepreneurship and micro- electronics.
Diversity:

The incoming batch stands out for its unusual diversity that is generally not witnessed in India B-Schools. Apart from students from across the world who’ve graduated in diverse streams, the batch also consists of students who’ve excelled at sports and have varied interests. The batch comprises of national level players in football, cricket, hockey, table-tennis, badminton and chess.
There batch also consists of Gold and silver medalists in national olympiads, national level quizzers, scuba-diving instructors, Guinness world record holders, NTSE scholars, certified musicians, thespians whove been part of street-play groups, professional photographers, those who’ve represented India as Hard rock café ambassadors of rock and mountaineers.
