IIM Calcutta Launches 5th batch of PGPEX
IIM Calcutta Campus, May 16, 2011, Kolkata: After successfully completing previous four batches, IIM Calcutta has recently launched the fifth batch of the Post Graduate Programme for Executives (PGPEX) in presence of Director, Professor Shekhar Chaudhuri, Dean (Programme Initiatives) Professor Sougata Ray, Chairman – PGPEX, Professor C Panduranga Bhatta, Chairman, Career Development & Placement Office, Professor Amit Dhiman and Advisor: Administration, Shri Dinesh Varma. During the event, the students were briefed for the 2011-12 session about the programme structure and various courses offered in different areas during the extended inaugural session. The occasion also gave them the opportunity to know officially that the Institute is celebrating its golden jubilee celebration and they happen to be the most privileged ones being the students of this course on the golden jubilee year of the Institute.
The current batch has 44 students including 5 female students. The batch comprises of 8 Post Graduates and 36 Graduates. Out of 44, there are 42 students who have engineering degrees, along with 1 each from the streams of Arts and Science. The students, who have joined the one-year programme, come from diverse backgrounds such as IT, Investment Banking, Oil & Gas, Petroleum & Energy, Telecommunations, Banking, Government Heavy Industry, Manufacturing, Automotive, Research & Product Development and Indian Army.. While IT industry remains the dominant sector in the batch, the group includes students with a varied background too. Students from specialised profession like Oil & Gas, Petroleum & Energy and Research & Product Development services have already joined this programme, which underlines the fact that this one year full time residential general management executive education programme has earned its ground in Indian highly specialized academic programme domain and successfully targets the niche segment of the management education.
This year, the average and the highest GMAT score of the batch of students are 718 and 770 respectively. The highest and average work experience of this batch is 250 and 114 months respectively. The average age of the students is 33 years. They enjoy very senior positions as high as Senior Consultant, Engineer Lead, Project Lead, Senior Software Engineer., Manager Planning & Assurance, Head-Planning: Research & Development, Senior Quality Analyst to Director and Joint Director.
The PGPEX course is divided into 7 semesters of approximately 7 weeks each. The first 3 semesters are for compulsory courses while the 4th, 6th and 7th semesters have elective courses wherein the students are entitled to enlist in electives out of the total electives offered to them. The elective courses are conducted by the Institute’s faculty and reputed academicians from India and abroad. The 5th semester is devoted to the International Immersion programme of 4-5 weeks duration wherein the students either do projects in firms in India to hone their all round skills or participate in projects in reputed educational/ business organizations abroad.
In sync with its philosophy of continuous innovation in management education, IIMC launched the One Year Full time residential programme for Executives (PGPEX) in Dec 2006. On successful completion of the programme, participants are awarded a diploma titled “Post graduate Diploma in Management for Executives” (PGPEX). It is a unique blend of theoretical knowledge and case discussion enabling the middle and senior level executives to develop and strengthen their understanding of the required skills and their applications in a demanding environment. The selection process takes place through the multi layered criteria like GMAT score, personal interview, recommendation letters along with academic qualification and professional experience.
