
IIM Calcutta celebrates 46th Annual Convocation today
IIMC Campus, Kolkata, April 2, 2011: The 46th annual convocation at the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (IIM-C) will be held on the IIM-C campus at Joka on Saturday 2nd April afternoon. The Convocation happens to be the most important day in the Institute’s academic calendar. The whole IIMC community and especially the graduating students have been eagerly looking forward to this day to earn academic recognition in the form of diplomas or titles. Meleveetil Damodaran, the past chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI0 and currently the Chairman, Board of Governors of IIM Tiruchirapally would be the Chief Guest. Mr. Ajit Balakrishnan, CEO – Rediff.com and the Chairman of IIMC Board of Governors, would be presiding over the ceremony.
Director, Professor Shekhar Chaudhuri would speak on Annual Report of the institute for the year 2010-2011 while Chairman, Shri Ajit Balakrishnan would deliver his convocation speech through his well-researched document under the title of IIM Calcutta’s Contribution to Thought Leadership 2010-2011, highlighting institute’s professor’s contribution in research and publication for the said period.
Five students would receive Fellowships while Diploma will be awarded to successful PGP students which include 348 in PGDM and 35 in PGDCM. The Diploma will also be awarded to 44 students in PGPEX and 29 students in PGPEX-VLM.
The successful five Fellow Programme students are Satsheel Shrotriya, Subhasankar Chattopadhyay, Sathyajit Gubbi, Anurag D and Myshkin Tejas Deepak Ingawale. Satsheel Shrotriya has done his dissertation in Finance & Control Group under the title of “Commonality in Liquidity: Evidence from Indian Equity Market". Subhasankar Chattopadhyay in Economics Group under the title of “Essays on Contemporary Macroeconomic Developments in India" and is currently working as an Assistant Professor at IMT Nagpur. He would be getting Satish K Sehgal Doctoral student award of Rs. 10,000/- in Cash and a Certificate. Sathyajit Gubbi in Strategic Management Group under the title of "Strategic Leap to Multinationality: Study of International Acquisitions by Emerging Multinationals from India" and is currently Working as an Assistant Professor at University of Groningen. Anurag D in Management Information Systems Group under the title of "Some Investigations in Technical and Business Aspects for the effective Adoption of Wireless Sensor Networks" and is currently Working at Accenture Labs and Myshkin Tejas Deepak Ingawale in Management Information Systems Group under the title of "Network Dynamics of Knowledge Creation in the Wikisphere" and is currently Working at: Biosense Technologies Pvt Ltd.
In PGPEX, Parijat Garg wins the Gold Medal,sponsored by the Calcutta Chapter of the IIMC Alumni Association for being the First Rank Holder and the Institute Book Prize while Sachin Chandrashekhar Mungikar wins the Silver Medal sponsored by IIMC PGPEX First Batch Alumni for being the Second Rank Holder and the Institute Book Prize. Amit Abhishek Bansal, Diptarka Sensarma, Ganesh Surendra Shenoy and Moumita Ray win the Institute Book Prize. All these students; name would also appear in the Director’s Merit List.
In PGPEX VLM, A Gurumurugan would receive Chairman NMCC's Gold Medal for being the FIRST rank holder, B Vijaya Kumar would receive JICA Gold Medal for being the SECOND rank holder and N Vinoth Kumar would receive IIMC Alumni Association Calcutta Chapter Gold Medal for being the THIRD rank holder. All three would also be enlisted in Directors' Merit List.
Anout M Damodaran (Chief Guest)
Meleveetil Damodaran was the chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), the country's financial market watchdog, before which he had headed the IDBI Bank. Prior to that appointment Shri Meleveetil Damodaran took over charge as Chairman, Unit Trust of India, with effect from 15 July 2001. He belongs to the Indian Administrative Service, Manipur-Tripura cadre. He was officer on special duty with the Reserve Bank of India dealing primarily with the restructuring of 3 identified weak public sector banks prior to this appointment. Earlier, he was Joint Secretary (Banking Division), Ministry of Finance for five years. He has been succeeded as chairman of SEBI by C.B.Bhave. Currently he is the Chairman, Board of Governors, IIM Tiruchirapally.

Mr. Ajit Balakrishnan is the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta and Chairman and CEO, Rediff.com India Limited. Mr. Balakrishnan is also a Director of Rediffusion Dentsu Young & Rubicam Private Limited, India Abroad Publications, Inc., India in New York, Inc., India Abroad Publications (Canada) Inc., Value Communications Corporation, VuBites India Private Limited and Ajit Balakrishnan Foundation. Mr. Balakrishnan is also the Chairman of the Working Group of Internet Governance set up by the Government of India. Mr. Balakrishnan holds a Bachelors degree in Physics from KeralaUniversity and a Post Graduate Diploma in Management from the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta.
