The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta is all set to enter the Limca Book of Records[/b] with a unique and an innovative attempt- a 50 hour marathon session[/b] of ‘Footer’[/i][/b] as part of its golden jubilee celebrations. Set up in 1961 in collaboration with the MIT Sloan School of Management, the government of West Bengal and the Ford Foundation, IIM Calcutta, the oldest IIM in the country, is currently in its 50th year and what better way to mark it than with a 50 hour marathon session of its home grown sport-footer. Footer is IIM C’s own version of the Malaysian sport 'Sepak Takraw' which is essentially volleyball played without using hands.
The marathon footer session kicked off at 10 PM on Friday (12th August) evening and went on till 12AM on Monday morning. The event witnessed an enthusiastic participation of more than 200 students who regularly switched turns to ensure that a minimum of four players are playing on either side at any point in the session. The session was also streamed live on the internet for the benefit of IIM C alumni. And the marathon session was not just about sports-for as part of the marathon session, the illustrious alumni of the institute came forward generously with their contributions and donations[/b] to ‘Pehla Kadam- Share your smiles pledge’[/b]-an initiative of IIM Calcutta along with the Community Human Welfare Organization to bring smiles to underprivileged children in Joka by providing them with opportunities to come out with their talents and to ‘Gurukul’[/b]- a degree college along with a primary and secondary school for underprivileged students in Rae Barelli, UP. This school has been founded by one of the second year students of IIM Calcutta, Ms. Pooja Mishra
The other major events lined up for the golden jubilee celebrations include a lecture by the honourable Prime Minister of India Dr.Manmohan Singh[/i][/b] on August 22 and a mega conference on “Management Education for A Sustainable Tomorrow” to be held from November 14-16.[/i][/b]
