IIM Ahmedabad - Winners of Sangharsh 2015 - the Inter-IIM Sports Championship
IIM Ahmedabad emerged victorious at Sangharsh 2014 - the latest edition of the annual inter-IIM sports meet that concluded this Sunday at the IIM Lucknow campus. The annual event sees the top four IIMs of the country - IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta and Lucknow face off in a sports extravaganza with the victors securing themselves the mantle of champions.
The three-day event, which took place on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of January saw some of the best sportsmen across the four institutes compete in a range of contests, ranging across indoor, outdoor and track and field events.
IIMA outshone the rest in nearly every sport, winning cricket, chess, throwball, tennis, table-tennis men, volleyball women and badminton women and earning the highest number of gold medals. These were supplemented by silvers in men's volleyball and carom, and bronze in Basketball-Men, Basketball-Women, Snooker, Badminton-Men. It was an all-round display of dominance from the entire contingent as IIMA took the cup with a total of 102 points, beating IIMC in second place by a mammoth 18 points. This performance exemplified the dedication and commitment that the institute's athletes showed in preparation for and throughout the tournament.
The IIMA girls were the most dominating force on the field, as they won 3 Golds out of 5 possible sports. The girl's badminton team breezed past their opponents in both the prelims and the finals with decisive 2-0 victories in both matches. The throwball and volleyball team were brilliant as they won all their matches effortlessly to secure Golds in both events.
The Ahmedabad men's tennis contingent of Krishna Kartik, Krishna Dheeraj and Narayan Vyas were simply relentless, crushing the opposition as they cruised to the gold medal. The team earned straight-set victories in the singles and the doubles preliminaries. The Chess team has had a legacy of winning Gold for the last four years. With the weight of these expectations, the team delivered living up to their reputation with the Chess team winning gold with one match to spare. The chess team dominated their opposition winning one match 3.5-0.5, and another 4-0. The team never lost a single game in the entire tournament, while also checkmating their opponents in a record time of 3 minutes in one game.
This magnificent victory would seem a testament to the efforts of both the students and administration at IIMA to create opportunities for all-round development of students and encouragement for sporting activities
This is IIM-A's second consecutive win, and the third overall win in 5 years! This is further testament to IIM Ahmedabad's dominance in every field, be it academics or on the field. The next edition of Sangharsh will be hosted by IIM-A in January 2016, and there is a hunger to make it a three-peat victory! Celebrations continue on campus and one can be sure that this is just the start of more such winning performances.
