IIM A celebrates Joy of Giving Week

The opening day of the Joy of Giving Week at IIMA saw an art competition for kids called "Let's Paint". The event was conducted as part of the "Share a Hope" initiative, where Prayaas kids were encouraged to bring with them the kids in their locality. These kids were given a tour of the IIMA campus by the Prayaas kids followed by a discussion on the importance of education.

124 kids including Prayaas kids participated in the Share a Hope initiative and were also joined by the children of faculty member for the drawing event. For nearly two hours in the evening, the kids were immersed in creating their renditions of the Louis Kahn Plaza of the IIMA campus. The quality of the paintings was exceptional with the children receiving much appreciation. The event was a wonderful platform for the kids to interact with one another through the medium of art.

A wish tree containing the wishes of Prayaas children has been put up in campus and the DDB Mudra office. The tree is being rotated to different places inside IIMA campus. It was heartening to see the humble wishes of these children ranging from Encylopedias and audio books to spending a day with an IIMA professor. The wish tree generated a tremendous response from the IIMA community who came out in large numbers to fulfil the children's wishes.

On the second day of the week, IIMA students served dinner to around 500 staff workers

This year, in addition to the clothes drive that is held every year during the Joy of Giving Week, IIM Ahmedabad has initiated another collection drive – the dal collection drive. The drives are open for residents of Ambawadi and people residing around IIMA as well. The collections started on Monday, October 7 between 8 a.m and 8 p.m at the Residence Gate of IIMA. The clothes collected will be sent to Goonj, an NGO dedicated to helping the clothing needs of poor people and the Dal to Akshaya Patra, an NGO that provides food to school children.

On Monday evening, students of IIMA staged a cultural performance for both students and outsiders for a nominal fee, the proceeds of which will be donated to Prayaas to take up more socially relevant initiatives. This performance was a collaborative effort by the music, dance and theatre clubs of IIMA and was a huge success.

In addition to the events already held, as an extension of the Joy of Giving Week, Prayaas (the social initiative of IIM Ahmedabad students) will also be conducting its annual fundraising event VIKAAS. The event is scheduled to take place at the IIMA Old Campus on October 13, at 7:00 PM. It will start with a guided tour of the campus and will then be followed by national award winning performances by various clubs of IIMA. This fundraiser is also open to the general public for a nominal fee, the collections of which will be utilized to promote education among underprivileged students in Ahmedabad.

Yet to come is also 'A Day at IIMA', when members of over 20 NGOs and 50 members of the general public will get to experience life at IIMA. They will go through a whole gamut of activities like classes, surprise quizzes, club interactions and of course, the guided tour of the campus. The idea of offering a day at the IIMA campus evolved out of an earlier plan of holding MBA-in-a-day workshops across India's top undergraduate colleges as part of the institute's 50-year celebrations. Up until last year the opportunity to participate was given only to the students in the final years of their undergraduate studies. What sets this year's event apart is the inclusion of NGOs and other students and professionals as well.

The participants will be selected on the basis of a Statement of Purpose submitted by them showing their social inclination and stating their pledge to do something for the benefit of the society, not necessarily monetary contributions. The event is scheduled to be held on October 20, 2013.
