Ian Thorpe, OAM, nicknamed the Thorpedo and Thorpey, is an Australian swimmer who specialises in freestyle, but also competes in backstroke and the individual medley. He has won five Olympic gold medals, the most won by any Australian, and with three gold and two silver medals, was the most successful athlete at the 2000 Summer Olympics.
Ian Thorpe, a five-time Olympic champion, is in hospital fighting a serious infection and may not swim again. He contracted two bugs, one said to be similar to MRSA, after undergoing a series of operations on his shoulder at a hospital near his home in Switzerland and in Australia.
