HUMAN VALUES &CSR
AN OVERVIEW
? A clearcut definition of Human value is very difficult to attempt ? But if we analyse ancient philosophical thought various approaches come into forefront ? Normative approach- Represented by Plato who pioneered the concept of absolute value of Truth, goodness & beauty ? They are conceived as having independent existence of their own and are used as ideal norms for value judgement at a relative level of human existence ? In Indian context we stress on internal realisation so that it is in sync with universal self and this is the ultimate objective of human striving
? Another point view is the Theist view It is based on the metaphysical belief system which accepts the reality of a divine cosmic order and faith in the authority of creator of God who is the upholder of all the values ? The basis of all ethical, social, and other human values is sought in the enduring truth which is generally obtained through insights of sages who are believed to our indirect access to the God ? Although various religions differ in their rituals but the moral preaching offered by these religions are remarkably similar The notions like humanistic values of Love, brotherhood, caring &sharing are universalistic in nature ? In recent times this theist concept of human values has been accepted everywhere
? Starting from Buddha to radical humanism of Marx, the underlying message is very clear- Respect & dignity of humanbeings is the cornerstone of all these theories ? The second main approach to human values- the empirical concept adopted by the modern psychologists and other social scientists like Rokeach (1973) ,Schwartz (1994) It views values as a distinct component of the total human personality which conditiones attitude &behaviour of the individual &social groups ? This approach is non normative and is not based on any relegious, philosophical, world views ? Identification of values, their classification and their interpersonal relationship is based on empirical methods of observation, attituide surveys and stastical validation techniques
? These empirical studies and researches on human values has been sought to be used for various practical purposes like Leadership, team building, human resources etc ? Another way of classifying could be in terms of the level of aggregation These levels can be in the sphere of individual, sociological, ecological ? Individual level focusses on individual taken as independent entity who show characteristics like survival values, personal values, aesthetic values, salvation, self realization etc ? Sociological level is characterized by traits like caring, sharing, humanity, sense of social responsibility and their interconnectedness ? Ecological are chracterised by harmony with nature, concept of mother earth, sustainibility and conservation ? But all these are far from being exclusive Many of these humanistic approaches have theist foundation and many items from empirical approach So it is an amalgamation of all these approaches
Indian values
? It is said human values are found to be in the deep structure of the Indian psyche ? Purification of mind through mind stilling technique teaches practice of nourishing noble thoughts (compassion, friendliness, humbleness) and rejecting the wicked ones (greed, jealousy, arrogance) ? In a management setting these practices result in improved cooperation, non attachment to the selfish rewards of work, increased creativity, service to customer, improved quality, creating etico-moral standards, cultivating self discipline and self restraint, enhancing generosity (CHAKRABORTY1997)
