Not so long ago, five-star hotels and high-spending customers were inseparable when it came to selling premium brands. While five-stars hotels still attract the high-spenders, you can now increasingly also spot them at malls, often making impulsive purchases for Rs 35,000, say retailers tracking mall customers.
Besides retailers say the rentals in malls can be 50 percent cheaper than in five-star hotels, though conversions are very (90 percent) in hotels.
Which explains why premium brands like Hugo Boss are eyeing the malls. The premium-clothing brand, which operates four stores in India out of hotels like the Oberois in Delhi, the Hilton Towers and Grand Hyatt in Mumbai and the Leela in Bangalore, is relocating a couple of its stores to the malls. In Mumbai, Hugo Boss is moving out of Hilton Towers, said a source familiar with the development on condition of anonymity It may relocate the outlet to CR1; a mall in mid-town Mumbai, close to the Sufi shrine Haji Ali, though it is yet to sign up with the mall, said sources in the mall industry.
Next, Hugo Boss could move out of the Oberois in Delhi in favour of the Emporia mall being developed by DLF in Vasant Kunj. In Mumbai, it is looking at a mall coming up in Goregaon, being developed by Oberoi Constructions. Indeed, a host of premium brands planning to enter India (FC UK, Roberto Cavalli, Paul & Smith) are looking at building up their presence in malls. Brands like Mango, Lasenza and Guess have gone straight into a mall (Atria mall in Mumbai).
‘‘We are looking for high-end malls or malls with a dedicated area for highend brands,’’ said Harish Chandra, Hugo Boss’ brand manager in India. Luckily for him, many such malls are coming up in cities like Jaipur, Chandigarh, Kolkata and Hyderabad.
