The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Founded in 1963, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is a forward looking comprehensive research university with a global vision and a mission to combine tradition with modernity, and to bring together China and the West. CUHK teachers and students hail from all corners of the world. In 2007, we have more than 5,800 staff members, some 20,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students. Of these students, about 3,000 are from 45 countries and regions outside Hong Kong. The 100,000 alumni are connected through some 80 alumni associations both within and outside Hong Kong.
Teaching Excellence
The CUHK education aims to nurture students with both specialized knowledge and wisdom for life. It is distinguished by a flexible credit unit system, a college system, bilingualism and multiculturalism. Our general education courses broaden students' interests, widen their perspectives, and develop their ability to face the challenges of contemporary life. Our eight Faculties — Arts, Business Administration, Education, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Science and Social Science, with the Graduate School, offer over 330 undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
Research Achievements
The University received research funding of close to HK$1.2 billion in the 2005-06 academic year from various local and overseas sources. Four research areas led by our staff have been selected as 4 of the only 10 Areas of Excellence funded by the University Grants Committee. Our research centres have close collaboration with Mainland and overseas institutions. Many research products have been put into practical use through technology transfer and spin-off companies. In the 10-year strategic plan adopted in 2006, 5 among our existing areas of excellence were identified as key areas for strategic research investment: Chinese Studies, Biomedical Sciences, Information Sciences, Economics & Finance, Geoinformation and Earth Sciences. The aim is that these areas will achieve world-class impact, bringing enormous benefits to society.
Unique College System
CUHK offers Hong Kong's only college experience. Our constituent colleges, Chung Chi, New Asia, United and Shaw, complement the efforts of the University to deliver whole-person education and pastoral care. The college system helps to sustain intimate interaction among teachers and students, thus building strong identification of students and alumni with their affiliated colleges. Five new colleges, Morningside College, S.H. Ho College, C.W. Chu College, Wu Yee Sun College and Lee Woo Sing College recently joined the CUHK family. The new colleges will further enhance diversity and choice on campus.
Campus Environment
Our stunning 134-hectare campus overlooking the scenic Tolo Harbour is the largest and greenest in Hong Kong. We have 7 libraries, art museums, music halls, a swimming pool, sports fields, tennis courts, squash courts, a water sports centre and gymnasia. The campus is equipped with 25,000 network ports. Over 50% of our undergraduates reside in hostels, which accommodate over 6,600 students.

Facilities & Resources

The University has a range of facilities and resources aimed at making academic inquiry a smooth, invigorating and pleasurable process. They also add extra dimensions to life on campus - from the artistic and cultural, to the recreational and athletic. And at CUHK, you can enjoy all the conveniences of the urban centre without the hassle.

Accommodation & Living Essentials

Over 50% of CUHK undergraduates reside in the 23 hostels of our four colleges, Chung Chi, New Asia, United and Shaw. Jointly with six postgraduate halls, these accommodate over 6,000 students. In 2005, I-house began providing a multi-cultural living environment to local, non-local and exchange students. Several more hostels are in the pipeline.
All undergraduate students of CUHK are given the opportunity to stay in student hostels for at least one year during their studies. Hostel places are guaranteed for non-local students, exchange students and research postgraduate students. Allocation takes into consideration a student's traveling time to studies, his/her home environment and participation in student activities. Priority is given to specific groups of students including key office bearers of the Student Union, the College Resident Associations and other student bodies.
Conveniences including transport to and from the University, on-campus transport services, parking, medical clinics, bookstores, banks, a souvenir counter, a supermarket and a hair salon, are also available on campus.
