India: Co-Operative Movement:
India has world's largest cooperative network. Having completed a century of existence, cooperatives in India are found in all walks of life. The formal beginning of the modern day cooperatives in India is traced back to the passing of the Cooperative Societies Act of 1904. By 2005 the total cooperative organisations in India had crossed 530,000. With a membership of 260 million and a member capital base of over rupees 4000 million, Indian cooperative sector has an appreciable reach in the country. The Union government has set up the National Cooprative Development Corporation as an autonomous entity to provide financial assistance to cooperatives. National Cooperative Union of India is the federal organisation of all cooperatives with institutional membership from all over the country. It has two wings, National Council for Cooperative Training, which runs training centres for the cooperative staff and the National Centre for Cooperative Education, which focuses on member education and development. Federations/Unions of cooperatives are found in all the states and even at the district level.
