Her journey from peon to principal

North 24 Parganas (West Bengal): Fifty three-year-old Nirjharini Chakraborty, initially a class IV staff in a primary school, could qualify as an icon of women's empowerment.
The third child among six siblings, Nirjharini's struggle began when she was employed as an orderly in her own school soon after she passed out four decades ago.
However, today, merit and determination have taken her to the other side of the table from where she heads a college.
Nirjharini is now regarded as a popular teacher and an efficient administrator. But she says that she has hardly changed.
"I find no complacency in what I do now, neither did it hurt me when I worked as a peon. I have served both these posts with equal respect,” Nirjharini says.
The first milestone in her journey up the ladder was when she became a schoolteacher in 1975 after completing her graduation in Science. And a decade later she became a lecturer.
Nirjharini now with a doctorate degree, was appointed the Principal of RBC College for women five years ago.
"Whatever be the work, if you work with honesty and if you love your job you are bound to grow,” the lady says.
It may sound like a cliché, but is very reassuring coming from a woman like her.
