Kannur: Government has granted its permission for developing a Greenfield airport at Kannur in Kerala. The project which gained the ‘in-principle’ approval will be executed on a Build, Own and Operate (BOO) model. The Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (KINFRA) has been appointed as the nodal agency for the construction of the airport.
A special purpose vehicle Kannur International Airport Ltd (KIAL) appointed by KINFRA will be developing the airport. The project has already gained the required clearance from the Ministry of Environment & Forest and KIAL has already acquired 1278 acres of land. The body has however put forth a request seeking financial assistance under the Viability Gap Funding scheme.
According to the official sources, the Request for Proposal (RFP) for airside works will be released by the end of September 2013.
