When the EU was created in 1950, it was to link the nations and peoples of Europe together in the wake of WWII. It managed to bring together a divided continent and the EU has grown very short time how many new members have flocked to. The EU is aware of his position and use his influence to benefit himself and other people in the world. Although the EU is still evolving and still undergoes further democratization processes internally, enjoying its citizens today democracy, stability and prosperity.

As the world nowadays is one of mutual dependence, the EU is also to give other people in the world the benefits of economic growth with open markets. Therefore, the EU engages in a wide range of projects in terms of financial assistance and advice to poor countries.

The EU also works to promote prosperity, democracy and respect for democracy, rule of law and human rights outside its territory, then internationally. In this way the EU supports democratic values around the world and thus contribute simultaneously to create more stability and prosperity beyond its borders. Democratic values are also a fundamental part of the External Relations and European is open only to countries that uphold basic values such as free elections, respect for minorities, rule of law and human rights and the importance of these values is also highlighted in the Lisbon Treaty, Article 2 which reads following:

The Union is founded on the values of respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, rule of law and respect for human rights, including rights of persons belonging to minorities. This is the same common values in a society of pluralism, non-discrimination tolerance, justice, solidarity and equality between women and men.
