giving same social status to men and women

Believe it or not when it comes to gender inequities India fares worse than Pakistan. In fact, the country fares lower than all other countries in South Asia save Afghanistan. These are the findings of the 2010 Human Development Report released by the United Nations Development Programme on Thursday as per its Gender Inequality Index.

So while Pakistan may be in the news for its treatment of women and might have become a hot bed for international women's activism, it certainly seems to know how to take care of its mothers better. On maternal mortality, India -- with its abysmal record -- trails Pakistan.

talking about the prosperity of country through gender equality. ofcourse it will bring lots of prosperity. and dimpy said very correct that INDIA fares worst... but also i would like to bring one thing in front...

where there is some places where man dominates woman...
at another part we see that woman are given more and more exposures and preference.. attempt should be made to maintain equality and not of preferability. i personally see that the concept is on psychology of indian people... education system has to take due care along with our politicians too..

You may have heard the quotation:
Charity begins from home

In India, women are not given their due respect in their homes, how can we talk about national equality. So, before talking about this issue I would like to know how well you treat women in your house.

In recent years, there has been an alarming rise in atrocities against women in India, in terms of rapes, assaults and dowry-related murders. Fear of violence suppresses the aspirations of all women. Female infanticide and sex-selective abortions are additional forms of violence that reflect the devaluing of females in Indian society.

Empowered women contribute to the health and productivity of whole families and communities and to improved prospects for the next generation. The importance of gender equality is underscored by its inclusion as one of the eight Millennium Development Goals. Gender equality is acknowledged as being a key to achieving the other seven goals.
