Girls defy stereotypes while 'pretty in pink' still a no-go for boys

How important are establishing the boundaries for gender identity in young children? Can we damage their sense of selves, their integration into their community, their future prospects, by allowing them the freedom to choose for themselves? Do we, as adults and parents, pay lip service to personal freedom but consciously or sub-consciously assert acceptable standards when it comes to raising our children - boys, in particular?

Conform:

- I'm obsessed with football, and love playing all sports really
- I swear a lot (but I'm not proud of it)
- I'm awesome on the PS2 lol
- I don't talk too much - often give one word answers
- I love driving
- I'm quite short-tempered
- I hate shopping

Defy:

- I watch girly programmes like the OC
- I spend ages in the shower and getting ready
- I don't like getting wet
- I prefer longer relationships, and don't believe in casual sex
- I can be quite sensitive
