Get Cracking

with a week to go before the CAT exams, MBA students share their experiences on how to crack one of the toughest exams

Ajay Gehi
(2004,IIM-Ahmedabad)

Not an impossible task: CAT isn't so difficult if you plan your study schedule in advance and concentrate on your weak points. You could be slogging the entire year, but the last 40 or 45 days of complete concentration is of utmost importance.

MOCK the CAT : the best way to prepare is to take as amny mock CAT as possible. This will help you cut down on your mistakes. Even one less mistake per section, would improve your net score by a significant per cent. The mock CAT is a testing tool tha will help you understand how well prepared you are, and give you an opportunity to spend enough time on the analysis, as well as solving the problems that you have not been able to crack in the exam.

i used to write one MOCK CAT every sunday, at the same time as the CAT exam. It helped to write the paer faster and finish it on time withour mistakes.

Time management : the key lies in balacing the time available to crack a CAT exam, with the ability to pick up questions judiciously. It is crucial to know which questions to pick up so that they can be answered easily, and which to revisit at a later stage if you have the time.

practice makes perfect : My biggest strategy was to keep practicing. By the time i took the exam i had taken 40 tests. The CAT exams are divided into three sections, quantitative Ability, DI and reasoning. The idea is to constanly focus on those sections that you find difficult. I, for instance, found reasoning quite challenging and repeatedly focused on that.

Mock interviews : i prepared myself thoroughly for interviews. it is important to have clear, lucid answers on questions like why do you want to do an MBA? or how do you se yourself in the leadership role?
the questions directed at you during the interview could go from your educational background to your ethical values.

START early : i started my CAT preparations five months before the exams. The first thing i did was to join a coaching class. I prepared for the topics in advance. O apprached the professors who took the classes with my doubts. It is essential to get your queries answered, so that youn have no doubts when you actually sit down to take the MOCK test.

CURRENT AFFAIRS : I worked hard on my vocabulary and my knowledge on current affairs students think that they should know only about their subject. that is the bigest mistake. During interviews , they test your knowledge about current affairs, the economic and political realities of the world we live in.

Analyse your performance : Taking mock CAT, is essental you ned to become familiar with the concepts and grasp the content of the reasoning or the Data sets, But merely taking mock CATs will not hel. what will help is analysing each and every exam you take. for every two hous i spent taking a mock exam , i spent another four analysing my performance.
