French woes: Venus Williams out in Round 3

PARIS: Venus Williams hopes were dashed at the French Open on Friday after she lost to fourth seeded Jelena Jankovic 6 4, 4 6, 6 1. Roland Garros has not been a happy hunting ground for Venus since 2002.

She missed the last two Grand Slam tournaments because of injuries and for the second time in three years she has perished in the third round.

The 22 year old Serb dominated the five time major champion in the first set, winning 20 of the 24 points played in her service games, including the first 10. Williams recovered in the second set, jumping out to 3 0 lead and holding on by breaking Jankovic in the 10th game to even the match.

However the Serb sealed victory in an hour and 53 minutes when the American rammed a backhand into the net after a lengthy rally. Last year Williams lost to Jankovic in the third round at the Wimbeldon. Jankovic will meet either former runner-up Elena Dementieva or France's Marion Bartoli.
