Having a pet, means making it a part of your family. While this may be a beautiful feeling, it can be extremely dangerous, if we forget that animals have different needs and habits from ours.
Raising a pet becomes simpler if you are aware of the precautions to be taken. One of the most common mistakes an owner makes, is that their pet eats the same food as them. This could be fatal for your pet.
We all know chocolate is bad for all pets. Candy bars, baking chocolate and cocoa powder all contain Theobromine, a cardiac stimulant, and a diuretic. When an animal eats chocolate, they may become very thirsty, urinate excessively, vomit, diarrhoea, or irregular heartbeat.
So chocolate, even a little piece on occasions is a big ‘No No’. Although the symptoms may be subtle, death is possible within 24 hours.
Yukta Mookhey’s pet Yorkshire Terrier, Mushy has very different eating habits, and prefers raw fruit and vegetables rather than dog food. While this may sound like healthy eating habits, it may not be for a dog. “We are very careful about what he eats, and consult a vet before we start feeding him anything new,” explain the ex Ms World.
Onions and garlic are other dangerous foods. They can cause illness in cats, dogs, and livestock. Even grapes and raisins can cause severe kidney failure and death in dogs and cats.
Stresses Dr Swali, Vet, who has a pet clinic in Lokhandwala, “Onions are definitely out for dogs. In fact, avoid adding salt or any other masalas to dog food. A lot of people give their dogs a lot of vegetables like potatoes and tomatoes. Except for a few vegetables like carrots, beetroot, and spinach a canine’s body absorbs no other vegetable. So stop giving your pet any vegetables other than these.”
Actress Kashmira Shah’s pet dog Boo would often pick up and eat anything that would smell interesting. But she soon realized the danger in this, and had to get special training to get rid of this habit. “It is very risky if dogs eat everything they see. This can even be fatal at times, that’s why I had to take special measures, and get special training so that Boo only ate things that were good for him,” says the actress.
According to Dr Barry Kalsy, foods that can prove fatal for cats and dogs that should not be fed to them at any cost are chicken bones, chicken meat, and fish bones. “These foods tend to cause internal bleeding and the animal may collapse and die.”
This is a list of some of the most common human foods that have the most severe complications for cats and dogs. There are many foods that are ok for humans, but not for pets. It is always safest to stick to feeding your pets food designed with them in mind.
