Floods in Gujarat: 60,000 evacuated

AHMEDABAD: The flood situation was grim on Sunday in north and central Gujarat even as the Army was deployed and more than 60,000 people evacuated from areas near the banks of Sabarmati and Mahi rivers since Saturday.

Due to release of three lakh cuesecs of water from the Dharoi dam last night on the Sabarmati river, low-lying areas of Ahmedabad adjoining the river like Paldi, Sabarmati, Navrangprua, Chandra Bhaga are inundated with two to three feet of water, officials said.

Army has been deployed for relief and rescue efforts in Ahmedabad, from where the administration has evaucated 21,000 people since Saturday, they said.

City fire brigade officials this morning rescued 40 stranded residents of a society in Bhat Fathewadi area, officials said.

Fire brigade added that they rescued four people who were trapped in waters in slums of Chandra Bhaga area on Sunday.

An overflowing Sabarmati has also entered villages of Dholka and Daskroi taluka of Ahmedabad district. More than 15,000 people have been evacuated from both the areas as army has deployed in the areas, control room officials said.

More than 8,500 people have been evacuated from 26 villages of Kheda district along the banks of Sabarmati and 15,000 people have been evacuated from Anand district, officials added.

The water being released from the Dharoi dam at present is 2.25 lakh cuesecs and officials believe that situation is likely to ease if rains stop in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.
