Mumbai: Indian travellers can now get insured of flight delays beyond six hours with a new domestic travel insurance cover by Tata AIG and low cost airlines Spice Jet.
Available at a flat premium of Rs 129, domestic travelers can buy this policy while booking their e-tickets on Spice Jet.
The compensation for the flight delay will keep going up for every six hours upto 48 hours by Rs 1,500.
First of its kind domestic travel insurance policy, it also covers passengers for medical expenses and for cancellation of tickets under certain conditions.
“If we consider travel inconvenience, we mostly cover trip cancellation, trip interruption, baggage loss and common carrier delay. In the accidental part we cover accidental death, accidental dismemberment and any kind of hospitalisation that arises out of accidents, says Head of Travel Insurance TATA AIG General, Khalid Sohail.
But with the increase in number of Indian travellers and even bigger increase in flight delays, company is betting big on the growth of domestic travel insurance policy.
“We have already sold about 1,000 policies since morning for over 50 flights, so that stands at 20 per cent of the total no. of tickets,” says Sohail.
While taking insurance for international travel has been the norm, there are no takers for domestic insurance.
But with persistent problem of flight delays especially during fog and monsoons, covers like this could be of great use for the Indian traveller.
