Flat is in. Consumer preference for flatter displays has been growing, with flat TV sales tipped to capture a 60 percent of the entire TV segment by year-end. Last year, flat TV sales were 43 percent of the total market.
In October alone, market share of flat TVs is 65 percent. Flat TV sales grew by over 37 percent in October mainly on account of attractive offers and discounts during the festive season. The industry grew 14 percent in October with sale of 1.6 million units.
The growth in flat and flat panel displays is mainly attributed to the price rationalisation this year. Prices of flat TVs fell by 10 percent, while liquid crystal displays (LCD) TV prices have dropped by 35 percent this year. The price range of flat TVs in the 15-29 inch segment is Rs 6,000-26,000, while LCD TVs, 20 to 52 inch, carry a price tag of Rs 29,000 up to Rs 4 lakh. "Besides the consumer preference for flatter displays, some of the other factors that are contributing to the popularity of flat panel TVs include, growth in the sheer number of LCD models, reduction in LCD prices that one has seen this year and the increasing consumer awareness on benefits of LCD technology", states R Zutshi, deputy MD, Samsung India.
