The S&P 500, with traders looking ahead to next week’s Federal Reserve meeting in the absence of market-moving economic data.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 52.4 points or 0.33 percent, to 15,973.13, the S&P 500 lost 5.75 points or 0.32 percent, to 1,802.62 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 8.261 points or 0.2 percent, to 4,060.49.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 129.60 points or 0.81 percent, to end at 15,843.53. The S&P 500 slid 20.40 points or 1.13 percent, to close at 1,782.22. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 56.677 points or 1.4 percent, to finish at 4,003.813.

The 25 percent rally in the S&P 500 so far this year served as a reason for traders to sell some equities and lock in gains. The benchmark index slid throughout the day.
