US stocks fell in a volatile session on Tuesday as the impasse over the debt ceiling in Washington continued with no sign of progress toward a resolution.

The Dow Jones industrial average ended down 133.25 points, or 0.87 percent, at 15,168.01. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index was down 12.08 points, or 0.71 percent, at 1,698.06. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 21.26 points, or 0.56 percent, at 3,794.01.

US stocks closed more than 1 percent higher on Wednesday after Senate leaders said they had a deal to reopen the federal government and raise the debt ceiling, which would avoid the threat of a debt default.

S&P 500 sectors solidly higher, led by financial stocks, which rose 2.1 percent. Other groups tied to the pace of economic growth, including energy, also jumped. Crude oil rose 1 percent while gold was essentially flat.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 205.82 points, or 1.36 percent, at 15,373.83. The Standard & Poor%u2019s 500 Index was up 23.48 points, or 1.38 percent, at 1,721.54. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 45.42 points, or 1.20 percent, at 3,839.43.

The S&P 500 closed at a record high on Thursday as investor confidence grew following a last-minute deal to avoid a US default, but weaker-than-expected results from heavyweights IBM and Goldman Sachs pressured the Dow.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 2.18 points, or 0.03 percent, at 15,371.65. The Standard & Poor%u2019s 500 Index rose 11.61 points, or 0.66 percent, at 1,733.15. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 23.72 points, or 0.62 percent, at 3,863.15.
