US stocks closed out the week with a bang, with the S&P 500 finishing above 1,600 and the Dow briefly topping 15,000 for the first time, as Wall Street cheered a better-than-expected April non-farm payrolls report.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average shot up 142.38 points, or 0.96 percent, at 14,973.96.. The S&P 500 soared 16.83 points, or 1.05 percent, to finish at 1,614.42. The Nasdaq rallied 38.01 points, or 1.14 percent, to end at 3,378.63.

The US equity markets finished narrowly mixed as investors hesitated to jump in after the recent rally, but the S&P 500 rose to touch a fresh all-time high. The CBOE volatility index ended below 13.

US equities have risen the past three weeks with the Standard & Poor%u2019s 500 index racking up a 16 percent gain so far this year, due mainly to the sea of cash produced by the Federal Reserve and other major central banks%u2019 policies of ultra-low interest rates and asset purchases to stimulate their economies.

The Dow Jones industrial average ended up 123.57 points, or 0.82 percent, at 15,215.25. The Standard & Poor%u2019s 500 Index finished up 16.57 points, or 1.01 percent, at 1,650.34. The NasdaqComposite Index was closed up 23.82 points, or 0.69 percent, at 3,462.61.

The Standard & Poor%u2019s 500 Index slipped 8.31 points, or 0.50 percent, to finish unofficially at 1,650.47. The Standard & Poor%u2019s 500 Index rose 17 points, or 1.03 percent, to end at a record 1,667.47. The Nasdaq Composite Index climbed 33.72 points, or 0.97 percent, to finish at 3,498.97 %u2013 its highest close since October 2000.
