The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) was founded in 1909
through the vision of Sir Jamshedji Tata, possibly the greatest
among Indian entrepreneurs. One of the objectives that Sir
Jameshedji Tata had in establishing the institution, which
imbued it with the entrepreneurial spirit right at the beginning,
was that the investigations and studies in IISc concentrate on
such branches of knowledge that are likely to promote the
material and industrial welfare of India. Our mandate at the
IISc is to do research and to train people to do research.
Many institutions in this country have spun off from the
work done at IISc.
