Encounter specialist Pradeep Sharma sacked

Police inspector Pradeep Sharma has 112 encounters to his name

MUMBAI: “The underworld has won,” said a sombre-looking police inspector Pradeep Sharma.

The encounter specialist and former head of the Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) of the city police, who has 112 encounters to his name, was dismissed from the police force late on Saturday night for alleged connections with the underworld. “I got the order at 1am on Sunday,” said Sharma.

The development came after a special team of senior police officials conducted an inquiry against Sharma. “Sharma, who is of the rank of police inspector, has been dismissed after a probe found that his past records were undesirable,” police commissioner Hasan Gafoor said. Sharma was dismissed under article 311 of the constitution.

Sharma, who was posted in the Dharavi police station in northeast Mumbai, was served the dismissal order on Saturday, Gafoor said.

When asked if any further action would be taken against Sharma, Gafoor said, “Not at the moment. If required later, we will take appropriate action.” The commissioner also refused to elaborate why Sharma had been dismissed.

Reacting to the order, Sharma said, “I am surely going to appeal, but I will first consult my lawyers and then decide the next course of action.”

Dressed in a black and white striped T-shirt, Sharma looked distraught. “In my 25 years of service I have never been given even a small punishment and now I have been removed from service without any reason,” he said.

Stating that the charges of his underworld links were false and baseless, Sharma said he had killed 112 criminals in encounters.

“The criminals were from various gangs including those belonging to the Dawood Ibrahim, Chhota Shakeel, Chhota Rajan and Amar Naik gangs. I have also encountered terrorists. After all this, I am surprised that such allegations are being levelled against me,” he said, adding, “I am worried for my family and their safety.”

Sharma, who entered the police force in 1980s, earned a reputation as an encounter specialist while he was the head of the Mumbai police Crime Branch.

He had also come under a cloud during investigations into the 2003 custodial death of Ghatkopar blast accused Khwaja Yunus and had been posted to Amravati following a high court order.
