Empowering Diversity

What is Empowering Diversity?

Empowering Diversity is based on the concept that both individuals and organizations function most effectively in culturally empowered environments. Such environments fully recognize the significant benefits of diversity, include members of diverse cultural groups as full participants, act to eliminate all forms of discriminatory behavior and actively seek to empower all members with the skills and opportunities needed for both individual and organizational success. Put simply, culturally empowered environments increase the likelihood of success for a diverse range of individuals.

What Purpose Does Empowering Diversity Serve?

Empowering diversity is a systematic organizational transformation process geared toward the creation of culturally empowered organizations. The primary goal of the Empowering Diversity system is the development of culturally empowered environments that facilitate improved individual, organizational and community performance. Specifically, it enables one to do the following:

* Define concepts such as diversity, cultural empowerment and empowering diversity.
* Identify the various dimensions of diversity.
* Identify the benefits that diversity has for individuals, organizations and communities.
* Describe the extent to which we have become a diverse society and the implications of that diversity for individuals, business organizations, educational institutions and communities.
* Identify the behaviors that empower diversity and improve performance within teams, groups and organizations.
* Assess the cultural empowerment level of any organization and create a plan for improvement.
* Implement a systematic four-phase process that is designed to create culturally empowered environments.

How Will Empowering Diversity Benefit Your Organization?

Research has consistently demonstrated that empowering diversity in any organization leads to several favorable outcomes including increased ability to attract and retain the best human resources; improved leadership, communication and negotiation skills; better team problem solving, decision making and flexibility; increased sensitivity to the diverse markets now characteristic of both domestic and global competition; improved employee morale; decreased harassment; increased profits and sales; and enhanced quality and productivity.

How Does Empowering Diversity Work?

Empowering Diversity consists of a four-phase process which includes Pre-Assessment, Assessment, Planning and Implementation, and Evaluation. The primary goal of the pre-assessment phase is to ensure that key executives, managers, administrators, teachers and employees make a commitment toward building a high performing, culturally empowered environment, and create the structure needed to make the process successful. During the assessment phase, the organization examines the extent to which it functions in ways that facilitate the development of high performing, culturally empowered environments, and the extent to which individuals possess the cultural competence to function effectively in these environments. During the planning and implementation phase, the organization sets goals for the Empowering Diversity initiative, develops a specific plan for meeting those goals, and implements a variety of training and multicultural organizational development activities. The evaluation phase is used to determine the overall effectiveness of the Empowering Diversity initiative by examining the extent to which objectives are being met.
