Abstract
Purpose – The purpose of this Editorial is to introduce the current tourism and hospitality research
interesting topics in Taiwan.
Design/methodology/approach – Introduces the papers in this special issue.
Findings – All of these papers explore the issues concerning Taiwan tourism development.
The entries cover Northern Taiwan, two from Middle Taiwan, and two from Southern Taiwan.
That duly indicates tourism study, in terms of quantity and quality, comes from all over Taiwan.
Originality/value – This Taiwan special issue is a touchstone to initiate more tourism journals to be
published by the Taiwan special issue in the near future.

Introduction
Since announcing the call for papers of Taiwan special issue for the International
Journal of Culture, Tourism and Hospitality Research (IJCTHR) at the Chinese Tourism
Management Association annual members’ meeting in April 2006, it took over half a
year to collect over ten wonderful tourism, leisure, recreation and hospitality related
topics from Taiwan researchers. While appreciating 17 excellent anonymous
contributions, scholars diligently offered revised suggestions for nine papers which
passed the ?rst round selection. After the chief editor, Arch Woodside, reviewed these,
there are ?ve papers left after the second round selection.
Those ?ve ?nal chosen papers in the IJCTHR Taiwan Special Issue covered a
variety of current Taiwan tourism related research topics, including Japanese tourist
forecasting, inbound tourist experience and images of night markets, tourist
satisfaction with the Wind Chime Festival, Ecotourism perspectives, and special
interest tour preference. These papers demonstrate concern with issues such as the
impact of the 9-21 earthquake in 1999, the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)
outbreak in 2003, the unique Taiwan gastronomy of night markets, the most popular
special event and Ecotourism development studies. One of the authors is from
Northern Taiwan, two are from Middle Taiwan, and two from Southern Taiwan which
shows that there is quality tourism study right around Taiwan. The unique and
valuable contribution of each paper will introduce as below.

Forecasting Japanese tourism demand in Taiwan – an intervention
analysis
The ?rst paper, entitled “Forecasting Japanese tourism demand in Taiwan using an
intervention analysis”, is written by Dr Min. The time series model for forecasting has
been applied for three decades, and the time series intervention analysis to evaluate the
effect of disaster is also not new in tourism research. However, Dr Ming is the ?rst
Taiwanese scholar to apply the time series intervention model to forecast the SARS
outbreak among tourists in 2006. In this Taiwan special issue, Dr Min extended data
collecting from her previous research to achieve a more solid result. Hence, she
collected the data which covered the 9-21 Earthquake in 1999 and the SARS in 2003
and made an ARIMA comparative study to assess intervention analysis, producing
better comparative with forecast without intervention analysis. The data accuracy
indicates the reliability and validity of a model. Taiwan has, for a long time, been a
favorite Japanese tourist destination, so it is for natural that Japanese tourists ranked
the top spenders of Taiwan inbound tourists. Therefore, it is appropriate for Dr Min to
focus on Japanese tourists as the research target for long-term impact analysis. The
research result shows that both disasters only temporarily affected Japanese inbound
tourism. The study examines the effects in a detailed and accurate manner, enabling
tourism authorities to understand the dynamics of tourist behavior in a more
sophisticated way and to improve forward future tourism policy-making and planning.
Night market experience and image: comparison between temporary
residents and foreign visitors in Taiwan
The second paper, by Lee, Chang, Hou, and Lin, is the study of a unique feature of
Taiwan culture, the night market. Though the attractive features of the Taiwan market
for foreign travelers has been studied since 2004, the major contribution of this paper is
dividing foreigner travelers into temporary residents and foreign visitors, to discover
the experience and image difference of the two groups. The intention of this paper is to
segment the foreigner traveler by duration (three months) into two groups and to try to
discover the different night market traveling experience and image for each marketing
strategy. The authors not only listed detailed comparison of experiences and image
constructs of the two groups in the research results, but also examined the relationship
among all constructs of experience and image. The fruitful ?ndings of comparison and
relationship did provide us a very clear understanding that cultural background and
familiarity with a host culture will affect foreigners’ experience and image of a night
market. The most important ?nding in this paper is that experience is indeed related to
image for both groups. Therefore, the research result helps Taiwan Government and
entrepreneurs to develop an international promotion strategy targeted at different
foreigner travelers, according to the different length of stay, travel experience and
image.
Customer satisfaction survey and customer characteristic in festival
actively: a case of Kenting 2006 wind chime festival
The third paper is the current popular special event study of customer characteristics
and satisfaction with the 2006 Kenting Wind Chime Festival. Hosting the special event
cannot only increase visitors to create more tourism bene?ts, but also discover
diversity in local culture. However, how much the special event ?ts into travelers’

answer from the tourist’s perspective. The authors selected the 2006 Kenting Wind
Chime Festival as a case study, since it is the ?rst sponsored champion by the Tourism
Bureau among 12 promotional festivals around Taiwan. Though there is increasing
festival-related study emerging in Taiwan, the festival attendance pro?le and activity
satisfaction are still catching researcher’s attention. This paper belongs to the
exploratory research stage of festival study. Since the ?rst festival was held in 1994 in
Taiwan, the Taiwan festival research area leaves much space to be explored. This 2006
Kenting wind Chime Festival study is a standard basic visitor pro?le and satisfaction
descriptive study. Though the research method is rather simple, the research topic of
the most popular festival event is important. The value of this paper could inspire more
Kenting Wind Chime Festival related research. In short, this paper is the foundation
step for future rich festival research.
Business managers’ perceptions of nature-based tourism impacts
I-Lan County is the most successful tourism destination where tourism is designed
with a balance of green scenery and cultural heritage under the active participation and
strong cooperation between its citizens and government in Taiwan. At the same time,
I-Lan is the ?rst county to advocate special events and festivals in four seasons to
attract many domestic and international tourists and make signi?cant of tourism
revenue. Therefore, I-Lan always recognized as the champion Tourism County and
learning idol of the other counties in Taiwan. There are many papers which have
discussed the participants and successful factors of activities and festivals hosted at
I-Lan. However, the fourth paper of this Taiwan special issue is the ?rst to study the
perspectives of tourism entrepreneur from the view of social exchange theory. That
paper surveyed 15 different kinds of tourism related business ?rms with follow up
interviews to measure all aspects of tourism impact. There are some interesting
?ndings in this paper. For example: those tourism industry managers regard the social
and cultural impacts as more serious than the economic impact. There are cultural
identity problems which occur in I-Lan county involving confusion of delineating the
difference from China. The government authority on directing tourism development is
still endeavoring to meet high expectations, though I-Lan is the best model of
community participating in initiating tourism development. These ?ndings do provide
a gauge for local government to develop tourism policy and to gain much more
understanding from tourism industry managers.
An exploratory study of types of special interest tour preferences and
preference demographic variable analysis
The last paper of the special issue is an exploratory study of types of special interest
tour preferences and preference demographic variables analysis. In this study, a
special interest tour is de?ned as a customer-oriented tour to separate it from mass
tourism. Ecotourism is known as kind of special interest group. Special interest groups
have been studied in many papers in the past decades regarding the psychological
variables as segmentation base, tourist behavior, and preferences. There is a lot of
Ecotourism research in Taiwan; however, there are few studies on special interest
tours. This paper tries to recognize the special interest group topology and the
demographics of each group. The authors analyzed the correlation between

martial status are signi?cant with groups. This exploratory study provides a big
picture of the current popular interest tour group and participants in Taiwan.
The study result will be valuable for travel agents to create new packaged tours to ?t
the target tourist.
Future perspective of Taiwan tourism and hospitality academic research
The tourism education unit has been expanding recently in Taiwan. There are already
over 60 departments in leisure, recreation, hospitality or tourism in Taiwan colleges or
in the university system. Meanwhile, leisure, recreation, hospitality and tourism
research is merging more and more. It is certain that strong academic competition in
tourism research will go increase in Taiwan. We believe that this kind of research
pressure will result in more high quality tourism research papers. This Taiwan special
issue is just a beginning touchstone to initiate the publication of more tourism journals,
information about which will be given in a Taiwan special issue in the near future.

The tourism education unit has been expanding recently in Taiwan. There are already
over 60 departments in leisure, recreation, hospitality or tourism in Taiwan colleges or
in the university system. Meanwhile, leisure, recreation, hospitality and tourism
research is merging more and more. It is certain that strong academic competition in
tourism research will go increase in Taiwan. We believe that this kind of research
pressure will result in more high quality tourism research papers. This Taiwan special
issue is just a beginning touchstone to initiate the publication of more tourism journals,
information about which will be given in a Taiwan special issue in the near future.
