Terp Discovery 2016—Course Descriptions
EXST010: An Introduction to Public Speaking and Debate
You have ideas. You have things to say. Wouldn't you want to master presenting them? If so, join us for an
exciting two week adventure in which you will learn to speak and argue for your position in front of an
audience. You will learn how to prepare, organize and deliver a speech or a presentation for a topic of your
choice. You will practice delivery skills and interacting with your audience and master the basics of working
with visual aids and incorporating technology into a presentation.
We will make things ever more exciting by teaching you to argue and debate. Just so that next time you
have a request or you want to influence your parents or your friends, you will know how to make a
convincing argument. Throughout the program, you will learn what an argument is, how to develop one,
and how to argue with another person in a structured format such as a debate. Your experience doesn't
stop here. Throughout these two weeks you will receive personalized attention by working not only with
the course instructor but also with student teaching assistants with experience in public speaking and a lot
of knowledge to share. You will benefit from the vast resources the university campus has to offer, enhance
your research skills, and meet professionals who work in communication?related positions in the DC area.

EXST011: Designing Your Own Business
This multi?disciplinary course aims to teach students the basics of the business, strategy, and leadership
skills needed to launch and manage new ventures. Topics include learning the fundamentals of
entrepreneurship, how to assess the feasibility of a new venture, as well as how to apply best practices for
planning, launching, and managing new companies. Students will discuss a wide range of issues of
importance and concern to entrepreneurs, as well as learn to recognize opportunities, assess the skills and
talents of successful entrepreneurs, and learn models and “rules of thumb” to help them navigate
uncertainty. The opportunities and challenges of entrepreneurship are explored. (Enrollment limit: 20).
Course Goals are as follows:
• To understand what it means to be an entrepreneur and a leader
• To explore the characteristics and motivations that typically drive entrepreneurs
• To be able to identify and evaluate opportunities for new ventures
• To know how to gather the required resources to convert opportunities into new ventures
• To create effective executive summaries and presentations
EXST014: Discovering Architecture
Discovering Architecture is a foundation course to introduce students to the practice and profession of
architecture. The class will explore a broad range of topics related to the field of architecture including
design, theory, history and applications in professional practice. Coursework will also include an
introduction to the technical skills required in the design process. The two?week course consists of a series
of demonstrations, readings, discussion, research, and design projects meant to foster hands?on experience
in all facets of architecture and design. The studio environment at the School of Architecture will serve as a

laboratory for thoughtful experimentation in space making and media representation. Creative intent,
critical thinking, visual?spatial reasoning, iterative problem solving, abstract interpretation, and systematic
analysis will be the fundamental skills students will address as part of the course.
EXST016: Science Detectives: An Introduction to Forensic Science
A crime has been committed but the culprit is long gone... What now? Learn how modern science (biology,
chemistry, and physics) is used to figure out what happened and who is responsible. Students in this
program will learn a variety of techniques for analysis and identification of crime scene evidence, such as
blood, DNA, fibers, hairs, ink, fingerprints, and skeletal remains. They will then apply these skills to solve a
complex crime. In addition, students will learn about the diverse science professions that make up the
interdisciplinary field of forensic science.
EXST017: Animal Biology
What can we learn about ourselves by studying animals? This course will explore animal behavior and
physiology using a hands?on approach. Students will learn about the diversity of the animal world and how
these differences help animals to survive in differing environments. They will also learn about how the
commonalities between humans and animals enable us to study animals to gain a greater understanding of
human behavior, physiology, and health.
