Doughnout Receipt Pays Tribute

Doughnout Receipt Pays Tribute

The spirit of Mitch Hedberg lives on in the receipts of a donut shop where the late stand-up comedian’s joke involving donuts and receipts is printed.

Hedberg, who committed suicide in March 2005, has a bit that pokes fun at the absurdity of getting a receipt in exchange for purchasing a donut. I bought a donut and they gave me a receipt for the donut. I don’t need a receipt for the donut. I give you money and you give me the donut, end of transaction, the receipt says, copying Hedberg’s joke verbatim. We don’t need to bring ink and paper into this. I can’t imagine a scenario that I would have to prove that I bought a donut.

The Freshest Donuts employee, who goes by buckwheatwaffle on Reddit, posted the note which features a snippet of Hedberg's doughtnut bit. The stand-up comedian, who died in 2005 of an apparent drug overdose, poked fun at the concept of providing receipts for trivial everyday transactions like buying a doughnut, for instance.

Buckwheatwaffle said he was given control over what gets printed on the shop's receipts. Although the user said his boss was unaware what would be printed, the boss thought the joke was funny. My boss actually found it hilarious, which is why my job is so awesome, the user said. In the full version of the joke, which you can hear below, Hedberg says maybe a skeptical friend might not trust that he bought a donut. Don’t even act like I didn’t get that donut! I got the documentation right here Hedberg says. Oh wait its back home. In the file Under D for donut. Cause we all know what D is.
