DON V/s DON

As we get closer to October 2006, the hype around director Farhan Akhtar’s ‘Don’ is reaching a crescent. Needless to stress, big comparisons will be drawn when Shah Rukh Khan will reprise the eternal role of Amitabh Bachchan in ‘Don ’. Here we produce a compilation of some of the likely parallels to be drawn the next time King Khan will ‘don’ his charisma on the screens.

Bachchan was at the pinnacle of fame in his career delivering one hit after another in the late seventies when Chandra Barot’s maiden venture Don (1978) released. The film emerged as a runaway hit, lasting over 25 weeks in theatres. The ‘Khaike Paan Banaraswala’ and ‘Main Hoon Don’ songs became quite a rage.

Akhtar’s ‘Don’ has five songs. Of these, two are new compositions while three are altered versions of songs from the original movie. The two songs that have been rearranged and introduced in the new film are Bachchan’s ‘Khaike Paan Banaraswala’ and ‘Yeh Mera Dil’ where Kareena Kapoor would reprise Helen’s sensuous act.

In the original ‘Don’, Bachchan made a cool-dude-boss of a syndicate of gangsters. As he feasted on the glorious appeal of Helen (who at that time was 40 years old) in the spellbinding ‘Yeh Mera Dil Pyaar Ka Deewana’, the sinister magnetism of Bachchan left an enduring impact on the viewers.

Bachchan’s villainous act carried a unique sophistication that didn’t dilute the immense negative energy one associates with someone who is being portrayed as a bad man. And SRK is undoubtedly the biggest superstar of the present generation today and will apparently be the most able foil to play the modern day ‘Don’.

SRK may be known as the champion of romantic roles eternal roles in ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’ and ‘Veer Zaara ’ but the films that first brought success to him were ‘Baazigar’ and ‘Darr’ in which he was at his fierce best in the portrayal of the anti-hero. With ‘Don’ he will return to plying characters with negative shades.

So how different will Farhan Akhtar’s ‘Don ’ be from the 1978 movie starring Amitabh Bachchan in a double role? Well, if the word coming from within the cast and crew is to be believed, Akhtar’s ‘Don’ is much spunkier and a lot more stylish in its direction and treatment.

Shah Rukh Khan has self confessedly stated that ‘’Don (1978) is among his most favourite Amitabh films of all time. Farhan Akhtar himself, has long harboured the dream of remaking the film, and the dream is now being realized in the movie starring Priyanka Chopra , Arjun Rampal , Kareena Kapoor and Isha Koppikar besides Shah Rukh Khan himself.

However, Farhan’s film will not be a scene-to-scene adaptation of the original flick by director Chandra Barot. The remake will be a modern, contemporary version in which SRK, as the Don, uses all the state-of-the-art gadgets and technology in pulling off his ‘Don’ antics.

Farhan’s movie though stays loyal to the story of the original. But it improvises on the treatment of the story through stylish cinematography, crisp editing and a new age, innovative direction. The film will show SRK making style statements like a ponytail, some unusual dressing sense, and some daredevil stunts.

n one such action scene in the film, SRK will be shown jumping from a height of 15,000 feet. The stunt was executed under the guidance of Hollywood stunt expert Joe Jennings. SRK has himself done the stunt.

The film, like the original, has SRK in a double role. One is a don who is killed and another is a don look-alike rustic guy who is clandestinely sent on a mission by a cop to impersonate as the don and infiltrate into the plans of the drug mafia.

The film includes the famous song ‘Khaike Paan Banaras Wala’ in which SRK has also sung a few lines. The new movie also has the title song ‘Main Hoon Don’. However, this song is not a rehash of ‘Arrey Deewano Mujhe Pehchano’, but a complete original composition, with contemporary sounds by the musician trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy.

In all interviews leading up to the film’s release, SRK said that he is not trying to match Amitabh Bachchan’s performance style and standard in the remake. SRK has been clear in declaring that he has interpreted the character of the suave and cunning don in his own way and sensibility.

As for who will emerge as the better ‘Don’, the world can speculate but the real answer will only b known when the film releases in October. For now, you can dope on the narrative synopsis of the film and who plays whom in the new ‘Don’.
