Do the benefits of tourism outweigh the costs?

Tourism vastly increases income to a particular area or country, not only via direct spending but also through taxation and the purchase of luxury goods which creates a larger market than would be possible with purely local spending. In many less developed countries tourism acts as an alternative to cash crops, improving terms of trade and creating a more diversified economic base.
Revenue received from tourists can be reinvested in improving otherwise poorly funded infrastructure, both in areas visited and in the rest of the country too. :SugarwareZ-141:
 
Tourism is a big revenue generating industry for some countries in the World.Ofcourse this depends on the topography of the region supported by infrastructure.Even tourism occupies a considerable portion in India's GDP.Lot of industries benefit from tourism.Aviation,Hospitality sectors are dependant on the tourism.Some ppl have a regular habit of travelling during the vacation.Not only recreational tourism even some places are known for the eductional tourism.They benefit the students a lot.Students try to see the things which they have learnt in the books.This is enrich the knowledge the children.Not only that, a country gains some pride when the tourist places occupy a place in wonders of the world.
