Gokulashtami celebrations are going hi-tech, literally. The popular dahi handi event organised by NGO Sangharsh at Thane, will have none other than DJ Aqeel giving the music through the day.
“Aqeel’s a name heard by the common man but they’ve never had the opportunity to see him mix music,” says organiser Jitendra Awhad, adding, “The common man can’t afford to go to a disco paying Rs 1,000 as entry fee. It’ll be a delight for them to dance to Aqeel’s music.”
And what was Aqeel’s reaction? “When we showed him last year’s slides he realised it was a huge crowd — almost 50,000 people — celebrating and enjoying themselves. He immediately agreed and is thrilled about this event. He’s never done something like this before.” Incidentally, choreographer Terrence Lewis will give a dance performance too at the event.
Groups from across Thane and Mumbai are expected to be slugging it out at this venue for the prize money of Rs 11 lakh.
And, all this apart, there’s another draw. Ten members from different mandals performing well, will be chosen and sent to Spain for a cultural exchange programme. Spain too has something called the Human Towers Festival where people climb on top of each other in an attempt to reach for the sky in Valencia
