Supported by a multi-million dollar consumer marketing campaign to drive traffic to its retail partners, O Organics offers supermarkets and food service organizations a complete and proven solution to quickly and easily implement a comprehensive organic strategy across their organizations.
"Organics are rapidly moving from niche purchases to mainstream staples and we appreciate the opportunity to work with Albertsons LLC to offer the O Organics brand to its customers," said Alex Petrov, President of Lucerne Foods Inc. "With the strong, across-the-board interest from shoppers in health and wellness options, O Organics allows mainstream grocers to easily implement a store-wide organic strategy with the broadest possible product range and the ability to meet the order volume of the largest supermarket chains."
After selling half of their Florida locations to Publix Super Markets, Inc., the Albertson’s grocery store chain no longer needed their over1 million square foot distribution center in Plant City, Florida. Brian Rettig was hired to market the property for both sale and lease and the asset came to market in late 2008 as the economy was struggling and financing for commercial real estate was difficult to obtain.
Given the large size of the property, a national marketing campaign with a focus on investors, food-grade users and general users of large blocks of space was instituted. Through Mr. Rettig’s knowledge of prospective companies that had previously been targeting growth in the Interstate 4 Corridor, he was aware that Gordon Food Service had a need for a significant amount of food-grade warehouse space. Albertson’s also needed to retain some space in the building to service their remaining Florida stores.
A deal was structured for Gordon Food Service to acquire the 1.01 million square foot building and 158 acres of land and also lease back over 100,000 square feet to Albertson’s.
* In a down market, Albertson’s was able to obtain a sales price of $34.5
million
* Closing occurred in January 2010
* Largest single industrial building sale in Florida in the past decade
