Dinesh Trivedi (Member of Parliament and Former Railway Minister) mentors students of IIM Calcutta on nuances of joining politics[/b]

IIM Calcutta students have approached former Railway minister Dinesh Trivedi to seek guidance on popularising Politics and Public Policy as a career option for MBA students. Trivedi interacted with the Public Policy & Politics (PPP) SIG of IIM Calcutta and is set to visit the B-School on 3rd October 2013 to address the current batches of IIM Calcutta on "Country before Self". (Detailed interview attached)[/b]

The recently instituted Public Policy & Politics SIG of IIM Calcutta aims to provide a platform that encourages students to get rid of their inhibition of politics, to be aware and participate, in matters of national importance. IIM Calcutta offers several courses to its students on Public Policy and management and there has been a growing sentiment among the students to be more involved in nation building processes. Several MBA graduates are opting out of their professional careers to venture into full-scale political activism or governance due to the parallels between management and public service. [/b]

There are a considerable number of students at IIM Calcutta who have expressed their interest to learn more about governance. PPP aims to create a nation wide network of related societies/clubs in all Indian educational institutions in order to ingrain nation building sentiments amongst the contemporary student community. In an interactive session with the IIMCians (detailed interview attached), Dinesh Trivedi spoke at length about his thought process behind his radical Railway Budget of 2012 and emphasized the need for bringing in the best minds into politics and public policy making. He encouraged students not to be shy of joining politics and drew several examples of politicians from the freedom struggle who still serve as role models for the youth of today. In the candid interview, he spoke of the ills plaguing the Indian Political system and how he envisages the status quo to change with the involvement of students and professionals in decision-making. Trivedi has also expressed his desire to involve students in live projects related to Public Policy as well as providing them guidance in their pursuit of joining politics. [/b]
