Subject: Re-conducting the Common Admission Test (CAT)

Sir,
This is an appeal regarding the anomalies in the most prestigious Management Entrance Examination held in India, the Common Admission Test (from hereon, referred to as CAT).

Sir, we represent a group of students who undertook the aforesaid entrance examination conducted on the 19th of November this year. Being one of the most respected entrance examination for any programme run in the country, no anomalies could have been expected. But, the question paper belied expectations. There were gross anomalies in the CAT, something unexpected by the student community, the academia and people from other walks of life.
Since all of this was unexpected, taking into consideration the prestige of the examination, a good number of students ended up putting a lot of time into solving those anomalous questions which produced no results. This resulted in a lot of time being wasted on questions which were generically erroneous and hence, a poor performance by a candidate. Thus, our abilities were not really tested inside the CAT. Even after having put a lot of effort from our side, we would not get the deserved result because of the errors.

We appreciate your endeavor of taking up the responsibility and admitting the anomalies. But us, as well as other students, feel wronged. And we would like you to urgently and seriously look into the matter and direct the concerned authorities to re-conduct the aforesaid examination.
We would also like to inform you that we have also written about the same to the President of India, His Excellency, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. and to the HRD ministry of India.

A good number of students are with us in this request and to give credence to our stand, we have already started a signature campaign and also used the services of the internet. We have created the following pages on the URL of the websites:

Ref. (1) shouldtherebecatret est.blogspot. com
Ref (2) logicbehindthecatre test.blogspot. com

Copies of all these documents are attached. On these, the comments and logic for our request can be found. We have been receiving responses from students, people from the academia and other walks of life from across the country as well as the world. Most of these people are supporting our stand and requesting the institute to look into the matter and re-conduct thetest.

As for our signature campaign, we have received over 1000 signatures in our city itself; and all these are from just the student community. We feel that if we conduct the same for people from other walks of life, we would get a three-fold or even bigger response, supporting our request. Due to the efforts of people of other cities across India, who share the same interest, we have been informed that the signature campaign has been gaining ground in those cities as well. Hence, this campaign is nationwide and not just constricted to a single city between a handful of students.

We are making all the efforts on our part, and if need be, we can produce those signatures to the authorities concerned prove the strength vastness of our interest.

Roman]We would sincerely request you to look into the matter and help the entire student community by re-conducting the examination. Sir, its not a request with a selfish motive. This request is from the entire student community across India. This is a call for justice and fairness in this democratic country. The future of more than 1 lakh students is at stake. And, if we can say so, the future of India as well.[/FONT]

Firstly, I like to thank prakash_dudes................

excllent thread from PRAKASH..................THANX...............

CAT 2006 WAS NOT AT PAR WITH THE REGULAR STANDARD AND WAS IMBALANCED IN THE STRUCTURE, THEREBY THE REAL POTENTIAL OF THE ASPIRANTS HAS NOT BEEN TESTED JUSTIFIABLY

There are so may errors in tha paper..............i know even though i did not appear for it...........So CAT retest shud be taken ............... as the question comes for more than 1,00,000 students who appeared for it...................

The IIM faculty shud take decision wisely in the part of students..............n not to hang their future................................. i respect that student who written letter to Cahirman of Student affairs of Indian Institute of Management (IIM)............one shud come ahead like him to fight against this carelessness of the senior faculties of IIM..................

thanx...........again.............

:tea:

come on guyz...........................come ahead n fight to take retest..............

:bump:

i think it is better if we can have an online petition or something of that sort. This way people can sign the petition and present it before the IIM committee

I don't think there is any need for the retest..

I had given this year's CAT, I know it was though.. I had done it very bad..

Even if they take the retest, that is of no use.. Here everything is on %ile basis, i.e. how do you perform in respect of the other aspirants.. so, the paper is fine and there is no need of retest.. Bad scorers will do bad in the retest also..

About the errors, they should not consider the questions which has no errors..

I dont think there is a need for retest.

Agreed that it was irresponsible on part of the IIM's to set a paper with errors, but every CAT paper is unpredictable in its own way.

Now, if it was the govt, I would be a skeptic, but as its the IIM's , lets have faith and wait for the answer key :)

I disagree with ur statement. See relative performance is ok when the questions are correct. There is a difference betn being able to solve the right question or not and getting stuck with a wrong question.

Those who bluntly left the wrong question, gained time whereas those who did try it (or might have left it after some time) still lost that time, whether it be a minute only, which u should know is extremely crucial.

When u talk of CAT paper, u talk of quality, toughness and assessment of the highest form and hence even 0.5 % error cant be tolerated.

Under these circumstances, re-test is a fair option, taking note that such errors should never occur in the future.
