Businesses encouraging and supporting the voluntary involvement of their employees for community welfare work.

Limitations of employee volunteering as a tool for implementing CSR

• Obstacles to Measure
• Not just measurement of Inputs and Outputs • Measurement should include how Corporate bottom lines are being affected-Joan McDade • In 2004, LBG Associates estimated that less than 47 % companies measured/evaluated the effectiveness of their volunteer programs

THE OBSTACLES
• Lack of Resources

• An Inability to Track Volunteerism
-Time, money and resources invested in the programs, and the results.

• Lack of Research, Tools and Best Practices
• Time and Expense

-Not simply tracking outputs – number of volunteers, number of hours
served, type and number of projects completed. The goal is to determine outcomes – changes in attitudes, behaviors and conditions

THE OBSTACLES Contd..
• Lack of Interest -Not a Priority
-Takes time, money and resources

• Lack of Expertise • Difficult to Show Causation
-Difficult to make cost benefit analysis

• Fear of/Disbelief in Measuring
-Fear of the outcomes of measurement -Belief that measurement is against the concept of volunteering

When to consider Employee Volunteering?
• When current social initiatives would benefit from volunteer environment • When employees express an interest in a specific cause • When a community need emerges • When a strong community organisation approaches a business

• When a volunteer effort might open new markets
