Avnet, Inc. (Avnet), incorporated in 1955, together with its subsidiaries, is an industrial distributor of electronic components, enterprise computer and storage products and embedded subsystems. The Company distributes electronic components, computer products and software as received from its suppliers or with assembly or other value added by Avnet. Additionally, Avnet provides engineering design, materials management and logistics services, system integration and configuration, and supply chain services that can be customized to meet the requirements of both customers and suppliers. Avnet has two primary operating groups: Electronics Marketing (EM) and Technology Solutions (TS). EM markets and sells semiconductors and interconnect, passive and electromechanical devices (IP&E) and embedded products for more than 300 electronic component manufacturers. TS markets and sells mid- to high-end servers, data storage, software, and the services required to implement these products and solutions to the value-added reseller (VAR) channel. In October 2010, the Company acquired Broadband Integrated Resources Ltd. In January 2011, the Company acquired itX Group Limited.
Both operating groups have operations in the Americas; Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), and Asia/Pacific, consisting of Asia, Australia and New Zealand (Asia or Asia/Pac). Avnet creates a link in the technology supply chain that connects more than 300 of the world’s electronic component and computer product manufacturers and software developers with a global customer base of more than 100,000 original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), electronic manufacturing services (EMS) providers, original design manufacturers (ODMs), and VARs.
Effective October 5, 2009, the Company acquired controlling interest in Vanda Group from Hutchinson Whampoa Limited. In July 2010, Avnet, Inc. acquired Tallard Technologies companies (Tallard), part of Itautec S.A.-Grupo Itautec. On July 6, 2010, subsequent to fiscal year ended July 31, 2010, the Company completed its acquisition of Bell Microproducts Inc. (Bell), a distributor of storage and computing technology providing integration and support services to OEMs, VARs, system builders and end users in the United States, Canada, EMEA and Latin America. Bell operated both a distribution and single tier reseller business.
Electronics Marketing
EM markets and sells its products and services to a diverse customer base serving many end-markets including automotive, communications, computer hardware and peripheral, industrial and manufacturing, medical equipment, military and aerospace. EM also offers an array of services that help customers evaluate, design-in and procure electronic components throughout the lifecycle of their technology products and systems.
EM Design Chain Services
EM Design Chain Services offers engineers a host of technical design solutions in support of the sales process of complex products and technologies. With access to a suite of design tools and engineering services from any point in the design cycle, customers can get product specifications along with evaluation kits and reference designs that enable a broad range of applications from concept through detailed design including new product introduction. EM also offers engineering and technical resources deployed globally to support product design, bill of materials development, design services and technical education and training.
EM Supply Chain Services
EM Supply Chain Services provides end-to-end solutions focused on OEMs, EMS providers and electronic component manufacturers, enabling them to optimize supply chains on a local, regional or global basis. By combining internal competencies in global warehousing and logistics, finance, information technology, and asset management with its global footprint and partner relationships, EM’s Supply Chain Services develop a deeper level of engagement with its customers.
EM Sales and Marketing Divisions
Each of EM’s regions has sales and marketing divisions that generally focus on a specific customer segment, particular product lines or a specific geography. Certain specialty services are made available to the individual divisions through common support service units.
Technology Solutions
TS markets and sells mid- to high-end servers, data storage, software, and the services required to implement these products and solutions to the VAR channel. TS also focuses on the worldwide OEM market for computing technology, system integrators and non-personal computer (PC) OEMs that require embedded systems and solutions including engineering, product prototyping, integration and other value-added services.
Enterprise Solutions
With VARs as their customers, these businesses focus on the global value-added distribution of enterprise computing systems, software, storage, services and complex solutions from the world’s foremost technology manufacturers. The Avnet Solutions Path programs are a combination of training, sales tools and on-going support that help partners attain solution-selling expertise they can use to develop and deploy an array of data center solutions that address high-growth market segments.
Embedded Solutions
These businesses provide technical design, integration and assembly to developers of application-specific computing solutions in the non-PC market, including OEMs targeting the medical, telecommunications, industrial and digital editing markets. They also provide the latest hard disk drives, microprocessor, motherboard and dynamic random access memory (DRAM) module technologies to manufacturers of general-purpose computers and system builders.
