A few months back, Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code had a different story to tell.
The book was considered controversial and the criticism of the church led to violent protests. But the curiosity among buyers made it a runaway bestseller.
However, the scene is quite different now. A study of the Da Vinci Code and the history of the Holy Grail from the novel is being carried out in a church in Mumbai.
Perhaps this is the only way to answer the questions about the book being posed by the youth to the clergy. And the interest of the 300 young people, who listened to a study of the Da Vinci Code in an attempt to de-mystify it is quite evident.
“To some extent it does raise questions in my mind,” a delegate, Arun Mathai said.
The class tried to unearth the truth about some of the questions in the book.
* Was Jesus a mere man and not God as the church has insisted for over 2,000 years?
* Did Jesus marry Mary Magdalene?
* And more importantly did they have a daughter Sarah whose bloodline lives on in Europe even today?
* Did the church try to conceal facts over the last 20 centuries?
“I did get an opportunity to not only read the book but also watch the movie and each and everything in it is false. And it is of utmost importance that the youth are explained the facts and told the truth so that no doubt linger in their minds,” said H G Geevarghese Mar Coorilose, Metropolitan, Mumbai Diocese.
So while the church attempts to clear doubts among its young faithfuls, the book has already managed to sell more 55 million copies worldwide making it an unparalleled blockbuster.
The efforts of the church as it tries to adjust to a book, which it opposed violently just a few months back are no doubt an important step forward.
But the youth are confused as to whom to believe, the church or Dan Brown.
