Choice of a career

There are hundreds of career options for us. How do you make a career choice when you don't really know what you want to do? Does it seem like an insurmountable task? It's not. Yes, you will have to put some time and energy into making your decision, but your effort will be well worth it in the end.

To succeed in the career we opt for, we need to first know about our strengths, weaknesses and ambitions.Planning at the right time, taking the right step in the right direction is always essential for the choice of a perfect career.

Many people today are like this:

"An IIM graduate gave up her job in McKinsey and now runs a publishing company."

"A person who finished MBBS but is not interested to practise medicine."

These are some of the examples of lack of a good career planning in their previous years. While there are quite a few who are focussed and planned about their careers, many people still ,are moving around with their studies without a proper planning about their future. This is the case especially prevalent among the Indian students.

People at the present grow up very comfortably. So along with a good growth, 'confusion' also grows! Technically 'stable' sounding careers such as Engineering,Medicine,Chartered accountancy etc. gain a good amount of response and respect too... but after finishing their studies, many people think that it was not their career path.

Another problem is: Parental pressure.A person in the family may have been very good in a field and would have come out successfully. So parents think that should be a good career for their children too!!They would press their children hard and strong upon achieving their ambition, not his or her's!!!

Another problem, especially among Indians is the ignorance of thinking 'independently'. Everyone thinks, "How can a 17 year old take major decisions of life?"The answer is," Yes. They can, or even, they have to...".Independent decisions of students need to be encouraged for a successful and bright future.

How can a good career choice be done???

Ask yourself where you want to be in ten years. Does a particular job fulfil this developmental need? Does it provide enough challenges for you to move ahead on your career path? Think about your hobbies. Most of us have hobbies that we wish we could spend more time at. Ask yourself about the environment you want to work in. Do you want to be your own boss? Or would you rather follow the leader? Do you want to work in a fast- paced world, or would you rather do something that moves slowly? Accept your own realities. Know your capabilities.Forbid fear. Take a decision and take up the responsibilities....
