China cracks down on drug-related crimes

BEIJING: Chinese police have stepped up efforts to crack down on drug-related crimes with more than 36,400 cases detected and 45,100 suspects arrested during the first 11 months this year.
Police have seized 4.79 tonnes of heroin, 1.52 tonnes of opium, 4.9 tonnes of crystallised methamphetamine (commonly known as "ice"), 329,000 ecstasy tablets, 1.5 tonnes of ketamine and 267.5 tonnes of chemicals used to produce drugs from January to November, Liu Yuejin, deputy director of the anti-narcotics bureau of the Ministry of Public Security, said at a press conference here on Tuesday.
"We have achieved success in the fight against drug-related crimes," said Liu.
"As a result of the crackdown, heroin trafficking has been brought under control and heroin price saw a sharp increase in China," said Liu.
