The 25 paise coin, popularly known as 'chavanni' and which first came into being in 1950, died an official death on Wednesday.

According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), on Wednesday was the last day when the 25 paise coin held legal value.

"The coins of denomination of 25 paise and below will cease to be legal tender from June 30," an official said.

These would not be accepted for exchange at bank branches from Friday.

On Thursday too, the banks would not exchange 25 paise coins as the central government invoked section 15A of the Coinage Act, 1906, and withdrew them from circulation from June 30, an RBI spokesman said.

With the end of the era for 25 paise coins, the 50 paise (half a rupee) shall now be the lowest denomination coin in public circulation.

Other coins include those of denominations Re 1, Rs 2, Rs 5 and Rs 10.

Most small denomination coins - 1 paise, 2 paise, 3 paise, 5 paise and 10 paise - vanished from circulation a long time ago because the government found the cost of minting them many times more than their face value.

So sad, but i think that hardly anyone would have 25 paise coins with them.
It wasn't in use from a long time. And hence, the official death of chavanni doesn't make a difference (except for some ardent fans who love to have a collection of coins)

It is so bad to hear that circulation of 25 paise has stopped totally now the lowest denomination is 50 paise.

Time went so fast that in my childhood i had those ten and twenty paise coins....Now even 25 paise has received the same fate ...

I remember I had 10 paisa shiny coins , really small and cute ones in my purse that have I have transferred over the years to a new purse that I purchased. They've been in my purse for over 10 years for no reason except for a good luck charm.

Chavanni is no more useful due to inflation and we will soon be seeing 10 rs coins and 10,000 rs notes .. thats how the world is inflating.

People had 1,000 rs salaries in the past and they used to live a decent live then, today people have 1,00,000 as salaries but with the same quality of life.

Only the numbers inflate, the percentiles remain the same !

This move of RBI Is definitely going to inflate the economy and to make the common man poorer.

Poor becuming more poor ...

SBI official Pramendra Sharma, who is in his fifties reminisces, its hard to say goodbye to chavannibecause it was my pocket money when I was a kid. Ah! I used to spend it so smartly on barf ka gola, toffee and so many little things from the street vendors. In fact, when the kids of our mohalla gathered on playground, we used this little precious coin for cricket match toss.Like Sharma, the 25- paise coin played a very treasured role in lives of many others.
