develop their business ideas whilst a student at LJMU and after graduation.
‘Is Self-employment for me?’ workshop
2 hour session
This workshop enables students to explore the issues surrounding starting up a business, working as a
freelancer or becoming self-employed. Students will have the opportunity to consider the advantages and
disadvantages of self-employment, the types of skills required when working for yourself and find out
where to go to for further assistance if they wish to take the next step.
‘Who wants to be an entrepreneur?’ workshop
2 hour session
This workshop looks at what it means to be an entrepreneur and provides students with the opportunity
to test their entrepreneurial skills using the ‘E-Type test’. Students will also consider the value of having
entrepreneurial qualities within an organisation and being ‘intrapreneurial’ and learn more about the
various forms of enterprise – from private limited companies through to social enterprises and
community interest companies.
Developing your business idea
2 hour session
This session will enable students to start to explore their business ideas with the support of one of
LJMU’s business advisers. They will be given tools to develop their ideas further and find out what
support is on hand at LJMU to help them get started. Every business needs customers and we’ll help your
students find out who they are and how to reach them. We’ll also get students thinking about the
financial side of things and to think realistically about how much money they will need to get off the
ground (it might not be as much as they think!)
Working as a freelance – the lowdown
2 hour session
This workshop will explore the issues involved when working as a freelance. Students will explore the
advantages and disadvantages of freelancing and discuss what needs to be done to get started as a
successful freelance. Topics to be discussed will include looking for work, interacting with customers,
doing deals that stick, how to find out about finance and tax, how to try to make sure clients pay up,
what LJMU offers in the way of help.
XING business start up workshop
2 hour sessions
XING is an interactive game for groups of students to experience the thought and decision-making
processes and stages of setting up a new venture. It also helps students to practise their decision making
and problem solving skills, think creatively and work within a team. At the end of the session, groups
pitch their venture to the rest of the class.
Introduction to Business Planning workshop
2 hour session
This workshop will provide students with an introduction to putting together a business plan, one of the
most important tools for any new venture. It will cover aspects such as producing a SWOT analysis,
market research and developing a marketing and sales strategy. All students attending this session will
receive a free Centre for Entrepreneurship business plan template and workbook.
Intellectual Property workshop
2 hour session
A brilliant idea can be worth its weight in gold, but the path to its protection and development can be a
challenging one. This session will provide students with an introduction to Intellectual Property including
patents, registered designs, trademarks and copyright. Students will also learn how to search intellectual
property databases to see if their idea is original and learn how to find out if there is a market for their
idea.
Finance for Start-ups workshop
2 hour session
This workshop aims to take the fear out of finance –an area that many people put off when putting
together a business plan. Students will learn about start-up requirements, sources of finance and how to
produce sales, cashflow and profit and loss forecasts.
Young Enterprise Start up Programme
Delivered as a module in curriculum over a full
academic year
The Young Enterprise Start-up Programme is not a business game but a real business experience where
groups of students develop a business idea, adopt a limited company model and become business
directors within their own company. This taught and assessed module is currently delivered in
curriculum by the Liverpool Business School and supported by the Centre for Entrepreneurship team
and Young Enterprise.
Enterprise ‘Days’
The Centre for Entrepreneurship team has worked with a number of Schools and Faculties across the
University to deliver full and half-day student events which focus on self-employment, freelancing and
starting a business venture. Guest speakers from the local business community share their experiences of
setting up in business in areas that are relevant to the students’ area of study.
Entrepreneurial guest speakers
The Centre for Entrepreneurship team has access to a network of dynamic and inspirational
entrepreneurs from a wide-range of sectors. We can arrange for a speaker with experience of setting up
a business in a field relevant to your students’ area of study to come and speak to your students.
Students will receive an honest account of the highs and lows of setting up in business.
Work Related Learning placement with Student
Enterprise
Students with a business idea are selected by their department to undertake a four week placement
working with the Centre for Entrepreneurship team. Over the four week period students will have the
opportunity to develop a business plan, the chance to gain valuable commercial awareness and identify
what skills are required to become a successful entrepreneur
Students are supervised by the Centre team in conjunction with the academic department (although
there is a lot of emphasis placed on independent working as is the case when starting a business). The
format of the placement is as follows:
• Initial meeting with a business adviser to develop action plan
• Ongoing weekly one-to-one meetings over 4 week period with business adviser
• Opportunities to attend business networking events and relevant business meetings
• Continued support from the Centre for Entrepreneurship to develop business once placement
